A chilling and clear-eyed warning about the threats to our democracy posed by the increasing radicalization of the Republican Party, from a leading historian and intellectual

The 2024 election could be the last free election held in a unified America. So warns Robert Kagan in this brilliant and terrifying analysis of the perilous state of democracy in the United States today. If Donald Trump loses the upcoming election, as he did in 2020, but refuses to accept the result, as he also did in the last election, he is likely to call on his millions of followers to repudiate the election results. It will be a short step from there to Republican-dominated states rejecting the legitimacy of the federal government and effectively seceding. The United States at that point will cease to be united, with grave consequences for both Americans and the world.

In
Rebellion, Kagan dives deeper than the op-eds and think pieces to explore the historical forces that have brought us to this moment—in particular the long history of opposition to liberalism, and to government, that has shaped America’s character from the time of the Revolution to today. Trump’s unique capacity to tap into that tradition of dissent and circumvent the American system has brought us to the edge of dissolution—not for the first time in our history but possibly the last. This is an elegant and deeply informed synthesis of history, contemporary politics, and ideas that sheds light on this crucial moment.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An alarming but useful perspective on antiliberalism....[A] timely, well-informed analysis....Kagan cogently examines the bright long-term prospects for the Founders’ concept of liberalism, especially with the nation’s rapidly changing demographics—if Trump does not win the election....A powerful, much-needed political and social analysis that all lovers of democracy should read."

Bob’s book is first rate. I have been a fan of Kagan for many years—one of the top intellectuals of our era.

As a speed reader, I have read many books alerting me to the dangers ahead.
Books by the following authors have been especially insightful: Bradley Onishi, Tim Alberta, Liz Cheney, Mary Trump, How does Rebellion rank? At the top.
I have written a letter to Bob Kagan suggesting he send personalized copies of Rebellion to more than 200 folks of influence. Most addresses can be found on anywho.com Here is a small sample of my list.

If you can't understand how people you've known your whole life jumped down an evil rabbit hole and wound up in some other monstrous reality, this book will put the phenomena in historical context for you.

Having grown up in the rural south of the US during the American apartheid I can attest to the recent parts of this history from my own experience. Having studied the time of the framing of the constitution myself, I was very pleased to learn many things I didn't already know.

It supports my opinion that clinging to the constitution is more important now than it has been in a long time. That can be our sea anchor and keep us from drifting into the nightmare.

Please read it. It's worth your time I promise you.

Incredibly eye opening about our American history. Many elements Id never learned of before. It also has given me a new way to view the anti-liberal peeps throughout our political system. Highly recommend this book!!

An insightful overview of the birth of American (liberal) democracy, and the persistence of a large minority of its citizens that would gladly overthrow it. Motivated by timeless desires for order, presevations of perceived privilege, and, bizarrely, for "freedoms" that include slavery and men's control over women. The latter being so convincing and depressing, it almost made me feel like taking a shower after reading it.

One bone I have to pick with the book centers mainly on the author. I'm old enough to remember that he, and his fellow Conservatives, spent decades and vast resources, in order to demonize the word "liberal". So there's a degree of dark irony in reading Kagan's current defense of the term.

Very good book. This message needs to be articulated to all Americans. The president and his surrogates should be bringing the public up to speed on where the country has been and where it will go under trump.

Kagan has distilled the essence of the Founders fears about our republic’s fragility into a cogent argument about the real and urgent threats it currently faces. The histories he expertly outlines jibe with original sources and events in a clear-eyed fashion that can only be ignored by those unwilling to see. Timely and eminently readable.

Enjoyed the last chapter very much, but didn’t expect History, 101, for the majority of his well written book.
